Game On!

WHAT THE ... UAF?

SO WHERE TO BEGIN....

FIRST UAF KINDLY PATTED LYNNE ANDREW ON THE YOU KNOW WHAT AS SHE EXITED CAMPUS LAST WEEK.
NOW IT LOOKS LIKE HOCKEY COACH DOC DELCASTILLO MIGHT GET THE SAME TYPE OF TREATMENT.

WHILE ANDREW'S SITUATION IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT IT SURE LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING FISHY IS GOING ON UP ON THE HILL.

DOC FINISHED HIS FIRST YEAR AS A NANOOK WITH CRAP FOR A RECORD (9-21-5) BUT THE FUTURE LOOKED GOOD.  YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER HE STARTED THE SEASON WITH KIDS HE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT AND KIDS HE DIDN'T RECRUIT.  NOW THAT'S NOT TO SAY THESE KIDS AREN'T GOOD.... BECAUSE THEY ARE.  MULTIPLE PLAYERS ALREADY HEADED TO THE NHL AFTER JUST ONE SEASON WITH THE NOOKS ... THAT SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT NOT ONLY THE PLAYERS, BUT THE PROGRAM AND THE COACH.

IT'S MY UNDERSTANDING THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR WAS A LITTLE ROUGH FOR THIS TEAM ON AND OFF THE ICE.  BUT I WASN'T HERE THEN SO I CAN'T REALLY GET INTO TO IT TOO MUCH.

HERE'S WHAT I DO KNOW FROM MY PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE.  RARELY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PERHAPS URBAN MEYER (U OF UTAH 2003) , AND A FEW OTHERS, DO COACHES PRODUCE A QUALITY SEASON IN THEIR FIRST YEAR WITH A TEAM.  IT ALWAYS TENDS TO BE SOMEWHAT OF A REBUILDING YEAR.  BUT WHAT COULD IT HAVE BEEN THAT FORCED DOC OUT OR MAKING HIM WANT TO LEAVE...(TECHNICALLY AS OF TODAY HE IS STILL THE HEAD COACH FOR UAF THOUGH)  PERHAPS HE WAS TOO TOUGH ON HIS PLAYERS?  IS THERE SUCH A THING  . . . BOB KNIGHT?  WELL SURE DOC IS NO COACH KNIGHT BUT I BELIEVE COLLEGE PLAYERS NEED DISCIPLINE.

YOUR FIRST AND FOREMOST PRIORITY AT THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL IS EDUCATION.  YOU ARE NOT GETTING PAID TO PLAY FOR UAF OR ANY OTHER SCHOOL FOR THAT MATTER.

THIS APPLIES TO THE LADIES BASKETBALL TEAM AS WELL.  A LITTLE DISCIPLINE WOULD HAVE GONE A LONG WAY ON THAT TEAM.

SO WHAT AM I TRYING TO SAY IN ALL THIS RAMBLING ... REALLY WHAT IS GOING ON UP ON THE HILL.  DOESN'T SEEM TO ME THAT THIS IS A NORMAL THING TO BE HAPPENING.

This is true.  This is definitely NOT a normal thing, in fact, this becoming a routine thing.  Not just here in Fairbanks, but throughout the college sports scene.  Look at the most recent event that's going on.  Bill Self helped his Kansas Jayhawks win the national championship, and now his alma mater, Oklahoma State, is ready to put down a six-million bone bonus?  His alma mater / Big 12 conference rival (Kansas plays in the Big 12 North Division; OSU, Big 12 South Division) wants him as bad as the poor pocket-protection wearing science nerd wanting to go out on a date with the star quarterback's girlfriend in high school.  They are that desperate!!!  Keyword...desperate!

As for UAF, either they are desperate to hear what Doc wants to do, or they are desperate to get rid of Doc and send him back to Omaha.  For UAF to act like the New York Yankees all because of a poor record is just ri-diculous!  The Nanooks' athletic department need to understand that you cannot expect a miraculous turnaround overnight, especially from a coach who came in last year to replace someone who resigned.

So for UAF to consider about relieving Doc from his duties as head coach is just way out of whack.  If the Nanooks decide to do just that, they can go ahead and start a new losing trend...a trend no one wants to be a part of at any point of any season.
